Clegg Food Projects are trusted construction specialists within the bakery and food-to-go sector, offering a tailored and personal approach, and have extensive experience in designing and building food production facilities. 

Some of our earliest projects were with bakery customers producing a range of products, from pork pies to loaves of bread. Since then, as customer tastes and trends have shaped demand, we have completed numerous new build bakeries – on both green and brownfield sites – and dozens of extensions and refurbishment projects. 

We have extensive experience designing and building bakery production and distribution facilities. As a bakery construction specialist offering full turnkey services, we know that each project is different. We work with customers and client teams to design and build the most appropriate facilities, delivering high-care food and people-safe buildings that are phased to meet specific deadlines, programmes and construction materials on a room-by-room basis. 

Our team regularly coordinates our construction programme with the installation of bakery equipment, including bulk storage silos, mixing systems, ovens, coolers, spiral freezers and end-of-line robotic packaging equipment, to help ensure our projects run as smoothly as possible. 

Step-by-step guide 

These are the detailed steps we take on each project that showcase our dynamic approach and close attention to detail:  

  1. Bakery client details project brief and appoints Clegg Food Projects  
  2. Our team can provide a full design, engineering and construction service – whether it’s a new bakery, extension, warehouse or storage and distribution centre 
  3. Design work commences, tailored to the client’s specific needs  
  4. We can prepare and submit a planning application for the project, if required 
  5. Detailed design and early-stage procurement of specialist packages for the building continues 
  6. The use of renewable and sustainable technologies is part of the design phase – including efficient plant, car charging points, solar panels and insulated buildings  
  7. Manufacturing requirements, including smart technology, automation and robots are accounted for 
  8. Full mechanical and electrical (M&E) services provided 
  9. We identify critical path items and manage our programmes to ensure work starts on time and items are phased correctly 
  10. Planning permission granted 
  11. Extensive preparation of the site commences, including demolishing existing buildings if necessary 
  12. Our in-depth knowledge of safe, clean, fire-rated and well-ventilated facilities for bakery production lines is crucial to the process 
  13. Strict on-site safety protocols are agreed, maintained and observed 
  14. Our team arrives on site and commences work, whether specialist build or installation 
  15. There is close liaison with the client’s operations team and wider staff throughout the process 
  16. We always factor in the need to deal with ‘live’ sites to allow for complex process equipment to be phased in  
  17. Our team ensures a smooth transition to ‘business as usual’ throughout 
  18. The project is completed to each client’s final approval

Design and construction: 

As the market leader for constructing food and drink facilities, we have extensive experience in designing and building bakery manufacturing facilities. We work with customers to design the most appropriate methodology and construction materials for each project. 

Installations: 

We co-ordinate the installation of bakery equipment into the construction programme, including bulk storage silos, mixing systems, ovens and coolers, and innovative new processing equipment. We also ensure building services and utilities are in place for when equipment arrives – and we understand the legislation and compliance challenges that businesses must tackle. 

Conversions: 

Clegg Food Projects can also convert existing warehouses into bakery processing facilities – including on live operational sites. We deal with all construction and building services installations, internal fit-outs for food and drink suppliers and can consult on relocations to other premises that need converting. 

Design support: 

As design and build specialists in manufacturing and the food and drink sector, we offer our industry-leading factory design services through a combination of our in-house team and partner practices. We have built strong and trusted relationships over 40 years. 

Extensions and refurbishments: 

Our sector knowledge and technical expertise is available to help extend or refurbish existing bakeries and food and drink facilities. We have essential skills in the expansion of existing factories and warehouses and can refresh and update a range of premises, including historic buildings. 

Live sites – maintaining production on a construction site: 

Most of our work is on existing facilities and projects delivered in ‘live’ operational environments. We are experts in coordinating people and product safety throughout the construction process. Segregation of the live works is key to ensuring safe and hygienic production operations are maintained, so that baked goods continue to be manufactured. We plan our work to minimise disruption. 

H3 heading: Flooring and drainage: 

Depending on the equipment, we often have to accommodate the need for increased floor loadings, particularly where vibrating equipment is required, laying new floors or upgrading existing ones.  

Refrigeration and multi-temperature storage: 

Our market-leading expertise in constructing frozen food facilities has provided support for many clients. We have built food processing facilities with blast chilling and spiral freezers, deep-freeze cold-store warehouses, packing facilities and fitted fully-automated high bay cold stores for the storage of frozen products for distribution.  

Ventilation: 

Our specialist engineers can assist with specialist atmospheric controls, including advanced industrial ventilation systems to deal with dust and explosive atmospheres (ATEX).  

Hygienic  

Clegg provides ‘clean room’ environments and high-care and ultra-hygienic building fabric finishes, such as white-walling installations, resin flooring, and stainless steel finishes to account for stringent food and drink safety standards, including temperature-controlled rooms.
