Project overview

Clegg Food Projects completed a state-of-the-art new build headquarters and distillery for Alcohols Limited, one of the UK’s last independent gin distillers.  

The multi-million-pound facility, located in Rugby, brings together Alcohols Limited’s head office and two divisions — Langley Distillery in Birmingham and its storage and distribution operations in London — into one consolidated site. 

About Alcohols Limited 

The business produces, stores, and distributes a range of fine alcohols chemical solvents and hydrocarbon products to a wide range of business sectors. From drinks, personal care, healthcare and pharmaceutical, through to packaging, specialty coatings, automotive, and chemical manufacturing industries. As part of the family-owned Palmer Group, Alcohols Limited has a storied history in spirits production. Its London Dry Gin is distilled using 100-year-old copper pot stills, ensuring the preservation of traditional methods while embracing modern innovation.  

Client objectives 

Alcohols Limited sought a facility that could streamline operations, increase efficiency, and showcase its heritage as a leader in premium spirits & base alcohol production. As the appointed main contractor, Clegg Food Projects was tasked with integrating diverse elements, including:  

  • Greenfield — Design & Build service 
  • A cutting-edge distillery 
  • A process plant with advanced capabilities 
  • Office spaces and a large storage and distribution hub 

The design also needed to ensure flexibility for future operational requirements. 

Challenges and Clegg’s approach 

The project presented several complexities, including designing a structure that met diverse operational needs, accommodating evolving project specifications through frequent consultations with the client, suppliers and consultants, and maintaining functionality at Alcohols Limited’s Oldbury site, which now serves as an innovation hub and interactive visitor centre. 

To overcome these challenges, Clegg Food Projects adopted a collaborative and adaptive approach. Regular coordination meetings ensured alignment with the client’s evolving needs, while flexible construction sequencing enabled design changes without affecting timelines. Leveraging their expertise in food and beverage facilities, the team delivered a highly functional and visually impressive solution.

The firm continues to honour its heritage, producing core alcohol for over 75% of British artisan gins, with traditional methods that celebrate its history.
