World’s largest electrolyser factory for ITM Power
As the principal contractor, Clegg was appointed to deliver ITM Power’s specialist fit-out.
Overview of the ITM Power refurbishment project
ITM Power plc appointed Clegg as principal contractor to carry out a major refurbishment and fit-out of its facility in Bessemer Park, Sheffield, which was completed in 2021.
ITM Power designs and manufactures products that generate hydrogen gas based on Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) technology.
This technology only uses renewable electricity and tap water to produce hydrogen gas on-site and has a product offering capable of being scaled to 100MW+ in size.
The project involved the installation of specialist rooms and zones to meet the research and manufacturing requirements of the business, which is focused on supporting low carbon and sustainable energy sources for the transport industry.
The Clegg team worked closely with the client’s technical specialists and design partners to agree on the size, standards, and specific design requirements for the internal fit-out.
This included an extension to the existing offices as well as the stack manufacturing and production areas. As part of the project, the team also created a ATEX rated test zone for factory acceptance that is coupled to a 5MW power supply on site.
Experience gained in the delivery of construction projects in other manufacturing and service sectors enabled the Clegg site team to quickly understand ITM Power’s needs and suggest options and alternatives to meet the future operational needs.
The project was under way when the Covid-19 pandemic struck. Clegg quickly responded to the requirements for safe working, provision of extra facilities, and implemented systems to ensure that the project could continue and meet its target timescales.
We are very happy with our new Gigawatt electrolyser factory at Bessemer Park. The facility is now not only the largest in the world but also has been designed and fitted out to include the latest state-of-the-art technology and semi-automated machines to enable us to scale up production of our electrolysers in line with the global demand for green hydrogen
